Through The Door- Welcome To SHSU!

“Lucy felt a little frightened, but she felt very inquisitive and excited as well. She looked back over her shoulder, and there, between the dark tree-trunks, she could still see the open doorway of the wardrobe and even catch a glimpse of the empty room from which she had set out. (She had, of course, left the door open, for she knew that it is a very sill thing to shut oneself into a wardrobe.) It still seemed to be daylight there. ‘I can always get back if anything goes wrong,’ thought Lucy. She began to walk forward, crunch-crunch over the snow and through the wood toward the other light.”

Welcome to University!

This is the moment that you have been getting ready for since kindergarten – the next few years will certainly be some of the greatest, most challenging, direction-setting times of your entire life. The friends you make, the course of study you choose, and the beliefs you wrestle through will play a huge role in how you spend the rest of your adulthood.

No pressure – this just comes with the territory and is part of the great privilege of attending college. Before you start working full time, before you start a family and a career, you have some time to study and think and learn.

Where does God fit into the picture? If you have grown up going to church, you may not have considered what comes next. Your parents aren’t here to make you get up and go to church on Sunday morning, or to go to youth group. Is this the end of your “church life”? Or perhaps you have never thought about God at all, let alone gone to church. Is there really anything to all of this Jesus stuff?
CS Lewis was one of the most brilliant and widely-read authors of the last century. You may have seen a film adaptation of one of his children’s books about Narnia. The famous scene referenced above is of Lucy and her first trip through the wardrobe into Narnia. Her very normal life is about to be changed forever as she takes the first step through the door and walks forward into the tremendous adventure and risk of Narnia.
The proposition of the wardrobe door is similar to that of a challenge found in the Bible – in the book of Psalms 34:8 it says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” What a great challenge, and what a great time this is to take God up on the proposition as you transition into college life.

Sam Houston State is a great school, and you have so much to look forward to with your studies, athletics and many other activities.

We want to invite you to come and check out Chi Alpha.

We are a fellowship of students who love God and have found real purpose and tremendous friendships, and we think you would love it, too – everyone is welcome.

Are you ready for an adventure?
